What is Hyaluronic Acid and its functions
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in our body, as a fundamental component of connective tissues. At the skin level, its presence ensures elasticity, softness, radiance, and hydration to the skin of the face and body, and protects it from damage caused by external factors and physical stress. With increasing age, the endogenous production of hyaluronic acid decreases, increasingly after the age of 40, leading to a loss of the ability to retain water, the progressive weakening of the skin, and the consequent appearance of aesthetic imperfections and gradually deeper wrinkles.
Chemically, the reticular structure of hyaluronic acid is such that it can retain large amounts of water, up to 1000 times its own weight, and provide hydration to the tissues of the human body; it acts as a cushion capable of holding moisture, allowing the skin to remain more elastic, toned, plump, and therefore younger. It also serves as a barrier against the penetration of viruses and bacteria and helps to soothe irritations and redness.

Medium molecular weight: penetrates through the skin and provides the necessary water to ensure firmness and plumpness to the skin.
High molecular weight: forms an invisible film on the skin's surface capable of blocking water evaporation and thus counteracting dehydration.
For a plumping effect, a cosmetic with a low molecular weight molecule is needed; otherwise, it risks remaining on the surface and failing to support the skin where it is most needed. This does not mean that high molecular weight hyaluronic acid products are useless; on the contrary, the hydration provided by hyaluronic acid will only concern the epidermis, thus preventing the water present on the surface from evaporating.
So, molecular weight and age: which hyaluronic acid is better to choose?
A more mature skin requires products based on low molecular weight hyaluronic acid as it needs to increase the presence of this molecule in the subcutaneous layer. Conversely, a younger skin can benefit from superficial skin hydration provided by high molecular weight, which thus prevents the water present on the surface from evaporating, preserving the skin's elasticity.
